As we find ourselves with more spare time than ever, it’s a perfect time to catch up on films we may have missed, or to revisit old favourites. Here are four that I have checked out while in quarantine, and a few quick thoughts on each.
Captain Fantastic (2016)
This comedy/drama flew under many people’s radars back in 2016. It stars Viggo Mortensen as a father of six. This family lives in the wilderness in Washington State. His children receive a rigorous physical and intellectual education but have no idea how to adjust to life in normal society. The film thrives from its great acting, funny scenes, and heartfelt message about family. Although the characters are difficult to identify with at first, as I learned more about their strengths and weaknesses, I came to relate to them more. It’s a really nice story, definitely worth a watch. It’s available on Netflix, so check it out.
The Town (2010)
The Town is a great crime thriller, directed by and starring Ben Affleck. He plays a thief in a rough part of Boston, who is looking to change his ways and leave his criminal days behind him. His loyalty is tested many times throughout, leading to some very tense situations. Affleck plays the character very well, with his inner struggle becoming more apparent as the film progresses. The robbery scenes were really well filmed, and the tension never let up. A great supporting cast, including Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm make this a very entertaining watch.
Tropic Thunder (2008)
If you’re looking for full on entertainment in the form of a comedy, then Tropic Thunder is the film for you. Featuring one of the best ensembles in movie history in my opinion (Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr, Danny McBride, Matthew McConnaughey and an unrecognisable Tom Cruise), the film follows a cast of prima donna movie stars filming a war movie in Vietnam, who end up involved in a real-life conflict with a Vietnamese drug empire. However, the actors believe this is all part of the movie they are filming, and don’t take it seriously at all. The humour is outrageous, the cast all on top-form, and the story gets more and more ridiculous as it goes. A fantastic comedy, one of my favourites, and ideal viewing for anyone in need of a good laugh.
The Goonies (1985)
A favourite of mine from childhood, The Goonies holds up as a really great adventure film. It tells the story of a group of pre-teens who find a 17th century treasure map in their attic and set off on a journey to find the treasure. A simple, yet exciting plot, made great through a brilliant young cast, and some very funny moments. A story of friendship, it is sure to bring back fond memories of our own childhoods. It’s very easy to watch, and fun for the whole family.
