The Five Stages of a Student Night Out in Galway

Updated: Apr 7, 2020

1). The Rush

Only applicable on certain days of the week, but you can be sure your college will schedule a 6 p.m. tutorial on a Thursday evening. Start speed-walking in your spare time to prep for the near-sprint home from college to get ready for pre-drinks.

2). The Politics of Pre-Drinks

After the getting ready process and a rushed dinner (probably your fourth consecutive night having a pasta based dish), it’s time to crack open a cold one with the boys, and/or girls. The vibe at pre-drinks sets the tone for the whole night so a good playlist is essential, preferably with classic tunes. However, get out of there before it gets too messy so you have your choice of venues in town for the night ahead.

3). Pub or Club?

This is probably the biggest, most difficult and defining decision of the whole night. Pub nights tend to involve chats on the couch followed by a good boogie, serenaded by a live band, being interrupted by pints and maybe a cheeky Baby Guinness. Club nights require high energy levels, mixed drinks and thumping techno bangers.

4). Dance Floor Shenanigans

You know your well on it when these events start happening:

A). You think you’ve turned into an award-winning interpretive dancer.

B). You hear the words ‘Shots on Me’ leave your unwilling mouth.

C). Deciding you are now best friends for life with a randomer who’s dance moves you approve of.

5). The Only Part of the Night that Matters

Food.

We all know the best part of going out is the food afterwards. In Galway, Pizza Napoli is the supreme destination but a Supermacs is never, ever a bad choice if you’re in the mood for more of a classic take-away. Sneaking out of the club early to get a cheeky take-away is always the best option.
